Moderator Commends Portadown Orangemen

Presbyterian Moderator Dr John Lockington has commended Portadown Orangemen for the peaceful manner of their church parade to Drumcree Parish Church.

'The commitment to a peaceful church parade by the Portadown District and the practical outworking of that are to be commended,' said the Moderator.

Dr Lockington continued, 'The potential for violent confrontation has been greatly diminished by the action of the Portadown District in the control of all those attending and by the comments of Mr Harold Gracey.'

'I hope that the conduct of the Orangemen together with their more flexible approach to negotiation will be reciprocated by others and that a resolution to this and other parade disputes can be reached in the near future.'

In conclusion the Moderator expressed thanks to the many who responded to his call to prayer. 'I would thank the many Presbyterians and others who, in response to my call, took time to pray. I would urge everyone, mindful of the present situation, to continue to be much in prayer.'
