The Leaders of Ireland's Four Main Churches today revealed an advertising campaign aimed at reminding people that Christianity is at the heart of the Millennium.
The single ad to be displayed on 48 sheet poster sites throughout Ireland for three weeks from the 13 December depicts the number 2000 with a small copyright symbol beside it. At the bottom of the ad the copyright symbol is repeated with the word 'Christianity' beside it.
Launching this unique campaign at Belfast's Waterfront Hall, Presbyterian Moderator Dr John Dixon said, 'Christ's coming into this world was THE defining moment in human history. As the new Millennium dawns, Christians everywhere in our world will want to proclaim this reality. We too, in Ireland, wish to celebrate the fact of His coming and give hope and direction to a society that desperately needs to grasp afresh His relevance to individuals and nations alike in these days.'
Archbishop Robin Eames added, 'As a Churchman, the Millennium speaks to me of the birth of Christ and the coming of Christianity. Christ is at the centre of the Millennium and the year 2000 confronts all Christians with searching questions. Where now? What is the role of Christianity in a new Millennium? The Christian faith is eternal in its meaning - but what lies ahead for those who seek to follow the Gospel of Christ?'
Archbishop Sean Brady and Methodist President Rev David Kerr also spoke at the launch.
The ad was designed by Belfast agency Genesis Advertising who donated their creative expertise to the project. 'The Millennium has been used by so many products and so many brands, that people have forgotten what it's really all about,' said Peter Stark from the agency. 'This poster's job is to remind people that the Millennium is about one thing - Christianity - and about one man - Jesus Christ. It's a simple message that needs a simple medium and a simple execution. Illustrated as graffiti on a stone wall, the visual partly refers to the Rock of Ages, but the overall approach is contemporary. It's intended to highlight what the Millennium is really about in a straight forward and accessible way.'
