Presbyterians Ask For Broadcasting Legislation Review

The Presbyterian Church has raised with Chris Smith, Minister for Culture, Media and Sport, its concerns over the ineligibility of religious bodies to apply for national radio broadcasting licences.

This matter came to light at the last meeting the Presbyterian Board of Communications when the circumstances surrounding United Christian Broadcasters programmes no longer being available on the medium wave was discussed. However, it was the wider issue of the ineligibility of religious bodies to apply for a national terrestrial licence for digital or analogue radio broadcasting that particularly concerned the Board.

In a statement the Board submits that this prohibition on religious bodies applying for a national broadcasting licence discriminates in principle against the freedom of religious groups in three areas:

  • Freedom of expression in denying access to the media
  • Freedom of religion
  • Freedom from discrimination
  • As a consequence the Board has requested Mr Smith to review the legislation.
