Killyleagh Presbyterians Celebrate 375 Years

Presbyterian Moderator Dr Sam Hutchinson will join Presbyterians in Killyleagh celebrating 375 years of Presbyterianism in the County Down town when he preaches at morning worship in First Killyleagh Presbyterian Church this Sunday (23-11-97) at 11.30am.

Already a number of events have taken place around the theme chosen for the celebrations 'Giving thanks for the past by investing in the future.' 'We do have a long history here in First Killyleagh,' says the congregations minister Rev Daniel Kane. 'However in reaching this landmark we are very aware that the best way we can show gratitude for that is to continue to reach out into the community and provide a strong witness in our locality. That's what we mean by investing in the future; presenting to people the Christian life in a relevant and meaningful way.'

One of the ways Killyleagh Christians are hoping to get out into the community is through 'The Cross.' This is an initiative of the local churches to develop a drop in centre right in the centre of the town which is scheduled to open its doors in late January. 'Killyleagh has high unemployment and lacks community facilities,' explained Daniel Kane. 'We hope that The Cross will at least partially fill that vacuum and in addition to helping the unemployed we hope to run activities like a homework club for school children.'

Apart from the Moderator's visit other special activities this weekend include an anniversary dinner this Friday night (21-11-97) at 7.30pm in the Church Hall and a special service of praise lead by Karen Marsden on Sunday evening (23-11-97) at 7.00pm.

Over the next months previous ministers of the First Killyleagh congregation will be invited to preach including Revs John Dickinson, Jim Harper and Douglas Mark.
