For the members of Clare Presbyterian Church the Moderator Dr Sam Hutchinson will be coming home when he travels to the County Armagh village to preach at their Harvest Thanksgiving Service this Sunday 19-10-97 at 12.30pm.
Dr Hutchinson was minister of the Clare congregation for 18 years from 1967 before becoming Clerk of the General Assembly in 1985. 'The people here were delighted when Dr Hutchinson was nominated as Moderator,' explained Rev Colin Harris, the present minister of Clare and who succeeded Dr Hutchinson. 'The first thought was to invite him to preach at some time during the year and the Session is delighted that he will be here at harvest, a time that is so important to the local farming community.'
The Clare congregation has already marked Dr Hutchinson's appointment as Moderator when in May, along with the neighbouring congregation of Gilford where he also ministered, they presented him with part of his moderatorial attire.
Dr Hutchinson is also pleased to be renewing his acquaintance with his former parishioners. 'For someone born and brought up in Belfast coming to rural Ulster was a big change. I particularly enjoyed the harvest season here because of its direct relevance to the community and I always feel that in the country areas harvest brings us close to the roots of our religion.'
Harvest celebrations at Clare continue on Sunday evening (7.00pm) when Rev Robin Greer will be the guest preacher and on Monday with an evening service (8.00pm) conducted by Mr Harris followed by a Harvest Tea.
Before preaching at Clare, Dr Hutchinson will conduct morning worship at Ahorey (11.00am) and in the evening he will again celebrate Harvest with the members of Glascar congregation at Donaghmore near Banbridge. (7.00pm)
