Moderator Takes to the River Foyle

Today, Friday 10-10-97, Presbyterian Moderator Dr Sam Hutchinson will take to the River Foyle to see at first hand the work of 'Foyle Search and Rescue.'

An increasing number of people are now attempting to commit suicide by jumping off the bridges into the River Foyle. 'Foyle Search and Rescue' is an interdenominational christian group set up in the city to bring immediate physical assistance to these people and then, if requested, to provide follow up help to deal with the problems that lead to the suicide attempt.

The Moderator is to meet representatives from the organisation at 2.30pm today at their headquarters at the old Strabane Railway Station at the Waterside end of the Craigavon Bridge and is expected to be taken out on to the River in one of 'Foyle Search and Rescue's' boats.

Other engagements to be undertaken by the Moderator today as part of his week long visit to the North West are:

4.00pm Meet with Mayor of Derry at Guild Hall

6.30pmVisit to Greencastle Fisheries School

The Moderator's visit concludes on Sunday with services in Newtownstewart (10.45am), Gortin (12.00noon) and 1st Castlederg (7.30pm)
