Presbyterian Moderator Dr Sam Hutchinson will be in Londonderry on Saturday to open a new £0.5m church hall at the Kilfennan congregation on the outskirts of the city. (Kilfennan Presbyterian Church, Sat 13 Sept at 2.00pm)
Formerly the Gt James Street congregation, Kilfennan was opened15 years ago and has grown 4 fold in that time and now has a membership of some 350 families. Until now the congregation has had no church hall, the church being originally designed as a multi purpose building.
'This is a great start to the new session,' said Kilfennan's minister, Rev Rob Craig. 'With the phenomenal growth in the congregation there has been a need for new facilities for some time and this is particular timely as we reevaluate our work coming up to the millennium and consider more effective and relevant ways being a strong christian witness in the area.'
This development comes soon after the recent merging of the Claremont and First Derry Congregations. 'Populations move about from place to place for a variety of reasons and as a church we have always sought to provide adequate resources where we need them,' explained the Moderator Dr Sam Hutchinson. 'It was the best use of our finite resources to merge Claremont and First Derry into one strong congregation and I'm delighted that in the same city we are now able to respond so adequately to a growth situation.'
The new facilities at Kilfennan include main and minor halls, a church office, classroom and kitchen and toilet facilities. It will be used 7 days for week for youth organisations, Sunday School and Bible classes and a range of adult activities.
