Presbyterians Celebrate 300 Years in Monaghan

Presbyterians in Monaghan this weekend celebrate 300 years of Presbyterianism in the area with a special service which will be attended by the Moderator Dr Sam Hutchinson and former Taoiseach Mr John Bruton. (Sunday 14 Sept, 11.00am, 1st Monaghan Presbyterian Church)

The theme for the celebrations is "Lord of the Years" and the emphasis is as much on looking forward as reviewing the past. "It is right that we should look back," explained 1st Monaghan's minister, Rev Brian Black, "because it shows us how good God has been to us here and we have a lot to be thankful for. But it also gives us confidence to go forward knowing that God is with us in all we do, guiding us and blessing us as we seek to witness for him in our situation."

Presbyterians have always been in a minority in the area but are recognised as having played in a significant role in the local community. One of the most outstanding ministers was Rev John Bleckly who became Moderator in 1852. He started a school in Monaghan which is still in existence today and was involved in a programme of famine relief during the time of the Great Famine.

Today the emphasis is still on playing an active part in the community and working at developing good working relationships between all people living in the area. This is reflected on the attendance at the service which will include representatives from all the churches in the town and local government. This strong feeling of community was further reinforced earlier this year when an attack on the church property appalled all sections of the community who immediately worked together to restore the damage.

"History shows that there have been good and bad times in community relations here," added Brian Black, "but our faith demands us to be salt and light in the community and that's what we are committed to being."

The Moderator will unveil a plaque to commemorate the anniversary and Mr Bruton will address the congregation at a dinner being held after the anniversary service.
