People's Service for Diana in Church House

A People's Service is how Presbyterian Moderator Dr Sam Hutchinson is describing tomorrow's service of Remembrance and Reflection in Church House. (Friday Sept 5, 1.00pm - Church House, Fisherwick Place Belfast)

'The desire for people to pay their respects to Diana, Princess of Wales, has been overwhelming,' said the Moderator, 'and I felt we should help in what ever way we could to provide some sort of focus for their grief. It is particularly fitting that the service should be in Church House where we have so many happy memories of the Princess's visit in 1992 to mark the re-opening of the building.'

In keeping with the tone of national mourning everyone is welcome and it is expected that civic dignitaries, representatives of charitable organisations and people of all ages who simply wish to pay their respects will attend. This is reflected by those taking part in the service which is expected to last about 30 minutes.

A Book of Condolence has also be opened at Church House which people may sign after the service.

The Moderator has already written to all Presbyterian ministers asking them to make whatever local arrangements they deem most suitable in order that people may pay their final respects to Diana, Princess of Wales.

'I'm asking each congregation to make whatever local arrangements they might deem best in their situation. Such local arrangements would afford opportunity to a greater number of people to pay their respects to one whose charitable and community work was greatly admired. I am aware that many congregations did in fact mark this event last Sunday, and that there is a limit to what can be arranged effectively at short notice,' added the Moderator.
