At this time of community tension, fear, anger and uncertainty, we, as Religious Leaders of a substantial number of people in Northern Ireland, appeal for the utmost restraint and calm.
Words and actions can endanger lives. Irresponsible and intransigent attitudes can inflame others. Confrontation deepens alienation and pushes society further towards anarchy. Violence, or the threat of violence, involves defeat for society as a whole. There can be no winners, only losers.
We believe this is a time of opportunity for responsible action and common sense by all.
Mindful of the example of Christ, we appeal to everybody to consider the consequences of their words and actions.
