200 Camp Out on North Coast

Over 200 boys from all over Ireland will be sleeping out on the North Coast next week at the annual camp run by the Presbyterian Church at its Guysmere Youth Centre at Castlerock.

The camp has been going now for some 70 years and in keeping with tradition the boys will sleep under canvas. What is different this year is that for the first time the new facilities at Guysmere, built over the last year at a cost of £0.5m, will be in use. These include a sports hall, larger kitchen, several activity rooms and improved showers and bathroom accommodation.

The camp runs from July 11 until July 19 with daily activities starting at 7.45am in a programme totally geared for teenage boys including a range of sports, visits to attractions, arts and crafts, quizzes, expeditions and walks. The emphasis is on having good fun, creating friendships and presenting not only the physical side of life but also the spiritual side as well .

Instructing and organising the boys is a group of 30 leaders together with a chaplaincy team of four ministers. In charge of the camp for the first time is Rev Philip McCrea, minister of Maghera Presbyterian Church.

'During the week we have planned over 20 different activities and sports for the boys to get involved in,' explained Philip. 'There is something for everyone from football to fishing - superstars to gladiators. Also it gives the opportunity to introduce the boys to Jesus Christ in a way that shows what He has to offer is vital to them and their lives.'

Presbyterian Moderator Dr Sam Hutchinson will visit Guysmere this Sunday, July 13, to take the Camp service in Castlerock Presbyterian Church at 9.45am and then will have lunch with the boys at 1.00pm.

While on the North Coast the Moderator will conduct normal morning worship at Castlerock at 11.00am and will preach at the evening service in Portstewart Presbyterian Church at 7.00pm.
