Over 700 youth leaders will attend 22 seminars at one of the biggest annual training events held in Ireland. Training Trevor, organised by the Presbyterian Church's Youth Board will be held at the University of Ulster's Jordanstown campus this Saturday 14th June from 10am to 5.30pm
This one day training initiative began in 1994 and was originally held in Church House. Such has been the demand for places it has been moved this year to the Jordanstown venue. A wide ranging programme will deal with issues of evangelism, discipleship and programme planning. Also there will be seminars on drugs, sex, music and youth culture to enable youth leaders to better understand the teenagers that they are working with.
The Churches are widely recognised as having the biggest and most effective youth programmes of any organisations that work with young people. As much as 50% of the Presbyterian Church's ministry concerns its youth. In addition to ministers that specialise in working with young people the church now has 40 full time youth workers in various congregations around the country.
Roz Stirling is the Presbyterian Church's Youth Officer and has been responsible for much of the organisation behind Training Trevor. "Quality youth work never happens without quality training. It does not matter how gifted we are, we all need the help and support of others who can broaden our experience, add to our ideas and help us to develop our skills."
Addressing the seminars will be a mix of local youth workers and visitors from the USA and England. Martin Saunders is head of Christian Missionary Alliance based in New York and will motivate the leaders about their vision, where it comes from and where it will take them to. At the opposite end Steve Stockman, Presbyterian Dean Of Residence at Queen's will deal with the disillusionment experienced by leaders. On a practical level Carnmoney youth worker Ken Armstrong will have help with the practical issues of running a youth club.
