Over 3,000 women are expected to attend the Presbyterian Women's Association Rallies to be held next Thursday (08-05-96 at 2.30 pm and 7.30 pm) in Church House, Belfast.
Representatives from 500 branches all over Ireland will fill the Assembly Hall for afternoon and evening rallies taking as their theme "Christ - Our Hope", and celebrating the 25th anniversary of the founding of the PWA.
"Though the PWA was only formed 25 years ago womenıs organisations have been part of the Presbyterian Church for over 120 years," explained Mrs Phylis Sleith from Antrim who is the incoming PWA President taking over from Mrs Margaret Boyd from Dromore. "Women have a lot to offer through the PWA, serving in their congregations, in the community and through their outreach of prayer and financial support to those whom the Lord has called to special work both here and overseas. I hope our meeting will encourage more women to be involved both at a local level and elsewhere."
The meeting will celebrate 25 years of PWA and will be addressed by Pat Shirley, a deaconess for the last 25 years and two missionaries Elma Harkness and Dorothy Shannon who will consider how the role of the missionary and particularly the woman missionary has changed in that time.
Also attending the meetings will be Moderator Dr Harry Allen who will bring greetings from the General Assembly.
The Presbyterian Women's Association has over 500 Branches with a membership of 16,500 drawn from Presbyterian Congregation all over Ireland.
The aim of the Association is to unite women of the church in the dedication of their lives to Jesus Christ and His service in the home, community and church; to share in the mission of the church at home and overseas through prayer and financial support and to provide a link with the women of other churches in Ireland and throughout the world. The organisation supports 15 missionaries in India, Jamaica, Malawi and Nepal as well as 30 deaconesses and women workers in Ireland.
