The Moderator's Coming Home

Presbyterian Moderator Dr Harry Allen comes home this Sunday when he preaches at morning worship in 1st Portadown Presbyterian Church (16-03-97 at 11.30am)

The Moderator was born and brought up in Portadown, initially in the Church of Ireland tradition, before joining the First Portadown congregation. He was only a member there a few months when he decided to become a candidate for the ministry.

"I naturally have many happy memories of First Portadown and it will be a pleasure to be with the congregation and to join in worship with them," said Dr Allen, who is the first member of the congregation to take the Moderator's Chair. Dr William Craig, now the senior minister of 1st Portadown was Moderator in 1979 and was minister during the time of Dr Allen's membership.

This is Dr Allen's second visit to his former congregation in is moderatorial year - last October he took part in a sod cutting ceremony that began a £750,000 building programme that will see the construction of a new halls complex on land adjoining the present church building. The completion date has still to be finalised but the new accommodation will consist of a 400 seater hall, kitchen and creche facilities and a range of meeting rooms for youth organisations, choir, committee, minister and session.
