The recently elected Moderator-Designate of the Presbyterian Church, Rev Sam Hutchinson, who will take up office in June, has appointed his two chaplains. They are Rev Uel Matthews, minister of Bannside, Banbridge and Rev Sam Millar, minister of the Hazelbank congregation in Coleraine.
Mr Matthews is Clerk of the Synod of Armagh and Down, a post which Mr Hutchinson himself held in the mid-eighties. His appointment as chaplain is a recognition of the close links between Bannside and Mr Hutchinson's former congregation of Gilford and of the enjoyable time the Moderator-Designate spent ministering in that area.
The role of Moderator's chaplain, while mainly honorary, involves assisting the Moderator during his year of office and particularly during the General Assembly in June. Chaplains may from time to time accompany the Moderator on official engagements including visits to the General Assemblies of the Church of Scotland and the United Reformed Church in England.
