Presbyterian Moderator Dr Harry Allen issued the following statement following the Bessbrook shooting.
I am appalled at the cynical and callous murder of a soldier by those who have no regard whatsoever for the sanctity of human life.
I offer the sympathy of our Presbyterian Church to the victim's family, friends and colleagues and my thoughts and prayers are with them and also with those who have been injured in the attack.
Violence never can and never will achieve political results and can only take us further away from the just and lasting settlement we all yearn for. I would appeal to the loyalist paramilitaries to maintain their ceasefire. Their restraint in the face of extreme provocation has brought them much credibility and ultimately will achieve more that terrorist violence.
I again call on all who believe in the power of prayer to be constantly in prayer that God would deliver us from the perils of the present time.
