It gives me great pleasure to extend to each one the greetings of our Presbyterian Church in Ireland. I am aware that this is a critical time for everyone in his land. Threat and counter-threat, mistrust and uncertainty are still with us and it is clear that the violence, intimidation and bitterness have not gone away.
As we face a New Year with all its opportunities and possibilities for good or evil, I would appeal for fresh attempts to be made to procure a true, just and lasting peace. This will demand courage and possible sacrifice, but it will be worth it.
We are all faced with choices on a daily basis and I would encourage the loyalist paramilitaries to maintain their ceasefire regardless of the pressures. I would also urge the IRA to proclaim a permanent renewal of their ceasefire.
Simple common sense can see that the violence, murder and destruction of the past years have only served to drive our communities apart and sow seeds of hatred and deceit. I would repeat what I said last June, that a mature society is one that has learned to live together in mutual respect and understanding. Is it too much to ask, that in response to the deep heartcry of the overwhelming majority of the people in this land and the clear teaching of Jesus Christ, we all make that extra effort to move away from violence towards peace.
My prayer for 1997 is that in thought, word and deed, God would turn us from evil. That He would enable us to seek what is best for our neighbour and to find and follow His will for this land. It may not always be what we would want but it will be best for all. May God grant to each and all a happy, peaceful and prosperous 1997.
