Mission in Christmas Appeal for the Shankill

The Presbyterian Shankill Road Mission is once again bringing joy to people in their area who find Christmas a difficult time. "With more and more cutbacks there is an ever increasing number of people who need help and this Christmas, just as we have been doing for the last 80 years through a special appeal, the Shankill Road Mission will be taking food parcels to pensioners and giving presents to children," said Rev Bill Campbell, superintendent of the Mission.

As always this is a church wide appeal and congregations from all over Ireland will be contributing toys and food parcels that the Mission will distribute during the week before Christmas. Next Wednesday, 18th December between 10.00am and 1.30pm, the Moderator, Dr Harry Allen will be lending a hand to parcel up some of the presents when he calls to see at first hand the work being done.

Over 100 people per day drop in to the Mission's Centre on the Shankill Road for help, for a meal or just a chat. The Moderator will be meeting the staff as well as talking with the people who use the centre. Dr Allen will conclude his visit with lunch at the Mission's hostel which was renovated this year at a cost of £50,000. The Hostel provides short term accommodation for the homeless and allows them time to find more permanent accommodation.

"Always at Christmas there tends to be a focus on the sort of work we do," said Mr Campbell, " but through our range of activities we hope to meet the needs of the people of the Shankill all year round just as we have been doing for the last nearly one hundred years putting into practice our belief that the Gospel is for the whole person, both physical and spiritual."
