Presbyterians Open Derryvolgie Extension

Just 18 months after opening the Derryvolgie Halls of Residence at Queen's University Belfast, the Presbyterian Church will open a £500,000 extension to the facility increasing the accommodation by 50% and taking Presbyterian spending on the Queen's campus in the last 2 years to a total of £2.5m

The opening of the new 30 bed unit and recreation hall will be performed by Presbyterian Moderator, Dr Harry Allen this Sunday, 01-12-96, at 8.45pm at the Halls in Derryvolgie Avenue off Belfast's Malone Road.

The Dean of Residence is Rev Steve Stockman. "Derryvolgie has been a really exciting development that has been well used by the student community and beyond. Students who are Christians are relevant and contemporary, they have something to say and can say it in a way that their generation understands. What we do at Derryvolgie is give them the stage to do that."

After the official opening Dr Allen will the the chief guest at 'After the Watershed,' a regular Sunday night feature at Derryvolgie. This is an informal magazine style programme of though provoking chat and music that considers current issues from a student perspective.

'Young Christians need to be in something that's vibrant and lively and that builds their confidence. Sunday nights at Derryvolgie are certainly that and we feature music, drama, video and interview to get students back into the swing of university life after a weekend at home, ' added Steve.

The development at Derryvolgie has been funded through money raised from income generated by Presbyterian War Memorial property and is run by the Board of Social Witness of the Presbyterian Church. It compliments the work of the Presbyterian chaplaincy at Queen's run by Rev Noel Williamson which last year moved to new premises at The Bush in Elmwood Avenue.
