Banner to Celebrate 350 Years

This year Dervock Presbyterian Church celebrates the 350th anniversary of its foundation, and as part of those celebrations the ladies of the congregation have made a banner depicting the life and witness of the church down through the years.

Measuring some 7 feet by 5 the banner features a range of fabric work that tells the story of the congregation from its roots in Scotland to its concern for world wide mission today. Images used include tartan, causeway coast stones, a depiction of the village of Dervock and its agricultural connections, the burning bush and the world held in praying hands.

"The Banner was made by Mrs Rosemary Surgenor and a group of ladies in the church," explained Dervock's minister, Rev Jim Thompson. "It shows very clearly the history and tradition of our congregation but it also shows that we are a forward looking church, concerned for mission in our own community and wider afield."

This Sunday, 13-10-96, at 12 noon, the celebrations will be joined by Presbyterian Moderator Dr Harry Allen who will bring the greetings of the General Assembly to the congregation. The evening service will be conducted by Rev Harold Boyce, a former member of the congregation.

Of interest historically is that the first minister of Dervock was Rev John Baird. He was a chaplain to the Scottish regiments that were based in Co Antrim at that time and it was he who preached the inaugural sermon when the Presbytery of Carrickfergus was formed in 1642, which is recognised as the birth of the organised Presbyterianism in Ireland.
