Tribute to Cardinal Daly

Presbyterian Moderator Dr Harry Allen has issued the following statement on hearing of the retirement of Cardinal Cahal Daly.

In the short time that I have known Cardinal Daly, I have been impressed by his incisive and sharp mind, the love he has for his people and his depth of personal faith.

During his time as Archbishop he has had to deal with some very difficult issues both for the Roman Catholic Church and more widely concerning the situation in Northern Ireland. His clear leadership and understanding have served his Church well.

The Cardinal's knowledge of Presbyterianism and its doctrines was what one would expect from a gifted academic and a North Antrim man and was much appreciated in his dealings with the Presbyterian Church.

His unreserved condemnation of violence marked his time, first as a Bishop, then as Archbishop and Cardinal, and his recognition of the need for reconciliation between all communities as clearly outlined in his books was welcomed by many.

Cardinal Daly's thoughts on reconciliation were practically expressed through his close involvement with the Inter Church Committee and the leaders of the other main churches. This was particularly highlighted in 1993 when the four leaders visited the USA. The cordial relationships among them surprised many Americans and did much to enhance the witness of the churches in a conflict situation.

I wish him a happy and peaceful retirement.
