Moderator Urges Talks Team
to have a Determination to Succeed

The Presbyterian Moderator Dr Harry Allen issued the following statement this morning (08-09-96) with regard to the resumption of talks at Stormont tomorrow.

The summer has left us a legacy of threat and counter threat, sectarian hatred and violence, boycott and division. Any trust that had been built up has been largely shattered. This does not take us forward but back into an even worse situation than we have experienced for many years.

Despite all of that there have been those signs of hope that when groups opposed to one another talk together with a genuine will to reach agreement, ways forward can be found.

Those at the Stormont talks have an almost impossible task but I would urge them to resume their deliberations with a determination to succeed that will help us to move forward and away from our present impasse.

These talks and all those involved carry a vital hope for the future. I would therefore urge everyone to pray constantly that God will grant them the wisdom, patience and courage needed to successfully negotiate a better future for us all.

I would also remind those involved in the talks that while we are praying for them we are also praying for a true and lasting peace in this land.

May I personally assure all involved of my prayers both now and in the future.
