Presbyterian Moderator Dr Harry Allen will be in Larne this Sunday (08-09-96) to join with two local congregations, Cairncastle and Craigy Hill, in celebrating anniversaries in their history.
At 11.30am Dr Allen will be joining in worship with the members of the Cairncastle congregation who are celebrating the 350th anniversary of the calling of their first minister. At a reception beforehand (11.00am in church hall) the Moderator will be presented with a shepherds crook to mark the occasion before preaching and assisting Cairncastle's minister Rev Richard Hill in conducting communion.
"An anniversary celebrates past achievements and this weekend we will be giving thanks for the ministry of Cairncastle over the last 3 centuries,' explained Mr Hill. "But we are also looking to the future to strengthen God's witness here and as part of the celebrations we are running a series of Sunday evening meetings based on the Alpha Course, where we will be gathering together over a meal to study our faith and the outworking of our Christianity."
Evening worship, a service of praise and celebration, will be conducted by previous Cairncastle minister Rev Colin Morrison.
By contrast the Craigy Hill Congregation is still in its infancy as it celebrates the 40th anniversary of the installation of its first minister and many of those attending the church now were among the founding membership.
Our theme is "Looking back with thanksgiving, looking forward with faith," said Craigy Hill's present minister, Rev Jimmy Johnston. "and we have organised a series of services and meetings to mark the occasion.
ThisSunday evening (7.00pm), Dr Allen will conduct worship followed by an informal reception in the Church Hall. Then from Sunday 22nd September until Sunday 29th September former ministers and assistant ministers of the congregation will be focusing the congregation on how their faith effects leadership and mission. Among those returning will be the first minister Dr Bill Boyd, Revs Bill Brown, Jackson Buick, Jim Fullerton, Ian McNie and Robin Quinn.
"A night to remember" on 27th September will be a night for everyone to share recollections of 40 years and view photographs and memorabilia of the life of the congregation so far.
The Powwow takes place at 2.30pm on Saturday, 31st August.
