Church Leaders Attempt Mediation
in Drumcree Dispute

The Leaders of the Four Main Churches in Ireland issued the following statement on 11th July, 1996, after meeting the groups involved in the dispute at Drumcree.

Over the past two days and nights as Church Leaders committed to a future of stability and understanding in Northern Ireland we have sought to find ways in which the two parties to the current dispute could reach agreement on the future. We have also sought to address the needs of the present serious situation at Drumcree.

This morning we met separately with representatives from both parties. Having listened and discussed extensively we are convinced that the will exists for a long term solution to this problem. However, we are also aware of the need to address the current grave situation at Drumcree.

While the long term solution and the immediate problems cannot be separated, we must appeal to all parties to show generosity and forbearance in order to resolve the impasse for now and the future, understanding the pain being experienced by all concerned.

We therefore appeal to all parties to continue to seek a solution and we are prepared as Church Leaders to offer our assistance in that regard.
