Presbyterian Moderator, Dr Harry Allen, has issued the following statement concerning events in the province.
I am deeply saddened that this dispute has escalated to such an extent and at this crucial hour I would renew my appeal of Saturday evening for calmness and sheer common sense to prevail.
I utterly condemn all acts of intimidation and wanton destruction of property. Such activities not only cause an unnecessary drain on government finances which could be used to better purpose but also bring our protestant faith into disrepute in the eyes of the world and assist the IRA in its evil work.
Many good law abiding people feel sorely aggrieved that their right to parade has been disallowed but I am equally sure that they in no way support the violence that has occurred. I urge them to take what action they can and to exert whatever influence they have to stop the violence and to reduce the fear and tension in the province.
We must not allow our country to be dragged back into the morass of murder and destruction of the past quarter of a century. We seem to be on the brink of anarchy and must pull back from there immediately.
The situation is obviously stalemated, and I call upon all concerned to find an acceptable basis for discussion so that the difficulties may be resolved.
I pray that it is not too late to find God's will in this matter.
