Next Tuesday over 200 young Presbyterians will take part in a commissioning service that marks the beginning of a summer outreach programme in Ireland and beyond organised by the Youth Board of the Presbyterian Church.
Thirteen teams will be spending a week at holiday locations and summer scheme venues throughout Ireland from Ballycastle to Carlow and Ballyrashane to Dublin helping local congregations in summer programmes involving street evangelism, door to door visitation and children's summer schools.
Three teams will be travelling further afield, one to London, one to the Czech Republic and the third to Jamaica. Again the teams will be working alongside partner churches and helping local congregations in their involvement with their community.
Giving the address will be Presbyterian Moderator Dr Harry Allen who sees the programme as a great opportunity for young people. "The theme for my year is 'Call to Faith and Action" and this programme is a very practical outworking of that. I'm delighted that the Youth Board takes this initiative which is of tremendous benefit to local congregations as well as to the young people who take part in deepening their faith and developing its practical application."
Also present at the service will be 30 individuals who have received funding through the Youth Board's Concorde Fund towards overseas visits to work alongside local churches and Christian projects in countries including India, Kenya, Honduras and China.
"During the summer many young people have time available that they want to use in Christian service," explained Presbyterian Youth Officer, Roz Sterling. "And we use this resource to establish groups that provides extra people power for local congregations enabling them to undertake a range of activities during the summer months that they couldn't otherwise do. It also is good for the team members widening their horizons and helping to develop their skills in a range of areas related to Christian communication. For those who go overseas it helps them to understand some of the problems that our partner churches face and enthuses them for work overseas that they invariably communicate to their friends when they return home."
The Commissioning service takes place at Moira Presbyterian Church on Tuesday (18-06-1996) at 8.00pm. It will be conducted by the Youth Board's Convener Rev Daniel Kane.
