In closing remarks made at todays (07-06-96) session of the General Assembly, Presbyterian Moderator Dr Harry Allen has again urged the IRAİto "show wisdom and courage and to announce a permanent end to all hostility and move away from armed activity towards the peace we long to achieve."
"We are very much aware of the need of the hour, and the urgency of the business of the Kingdom of God. I pray that with His help we will be able to go back to our congregations reassured of our faith and determined by His grace to put it into action.
"On the political scene, one cannot help but be saddened at those who are unable to or who refuse to see the need for tolerance and understanding in our community. My prayer is that there may be quiet agreement and accommodation on the parades issue over the coming weeks and I call again upon the IRA to remember that they must listen to the heart-cry of the people of this whole land and that whether they believe in Him or not, God will hold them accountable for their actions. I urge them to show wisdom and courage and to announce a permanent end to all hostility and move away from armed activity towards the peace we long to achieve. Actions always speak louder than words. That decision could have far reaching peace-building consequences for this land and its people North and South. Political posturing can so easily become political threat and such threat is neither democratic or Christian.
"As Moderator I call again at the close of the Assembly on all God-fearing people to work and pray tirelessly for peace and the advancement of His Kingdom."
