British Ambassador Presents Cheque to Nexus Ireland

Last week the British Ambassador to Ireland, Mrs Veronica Sutherland visited the Lucan Youth Centre outside Dublin to present a cheque to Nexus Ireland in support of its ongoing programme of reconciliation work among young people in Ireland.

Nexus Ireland is a peace and reconciliation project of the Youth Board of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland and has been based at Lucan since 1987 under the directorship of Dr Trevor Morrow. Its work has been generously funded by governments, churches, industry, the business community and individuals from within the island of Ireland and far beyond.

At present a £750,000 extension programme is being carried out that will provide greatly increased accommodation, a larger dining area and better catering facilities which will allow the centre to considerably further its work.

As a Christian centre for reconciliation and peace the Lucan Youth Centre and Nexus Ireland welcomes people from all over Ireland to participate in its programmes. Its popularity has increased dramatically over the last three years and is regularly used by churches of all denominations, schools and youth groups. It is a bold, fresh approach to reconciliation and peacemaking. It challenges the traditional tribal loyalties of young Irish people, attempts to change age-old fears and misconceptions and provides a forum for the churched and unchurched to communicate freely and to learn the principles of lasting peace. It does this by taking those involved out of their own environment and through the word of God, both spoken and lived practically, gives opportunities to form bonds of friendship and understanding in a way that no political solution can.

During her visit Mrs Sutherland met Dr Morrow, director of Nexus Ireland, Mr Maurice Kennedy, Centres Director and Mrs Helen Kennedy, Centres Administrator.
