StormontThe Presbyterian congregation of Stormont was formed in 1932 on the suburban edge of the growing City of Belfast, one of the 559 congregations of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland dating from 1642. In 1932 the provincial Parliament building was opened in the adjacent Stormont estate. Stormont Church is active also in the local Belmont and District Council of Churches with 2 Presbyterian Churches, 2 Church of Ireland, 1 Roman Catholic and 1 Methodist. The congregation has 560 families in 2006 (1,300 individuals). All professions and occupations associated with an industrial City and a commercial and administrative centre such as Belfast are represented. There are 53 active elders. Forty groups, clubs and associations in the congregation provide a service to church members and residents in the local community. They include Scouts and Guides, preschool playgroup, youth club, bowls, Evergreens, Adult Christian Education, Prayer Fellowships, Art, Womens' Fellowship, Mens' Breakfast, Ballroom dancing, music, Horizons (20-40), Keep Fit and choral groups. Sunday worship is at 11am when there is a simultaneous Sunday School and Creche for children. The evening worship at 6.30pm is quieter and more contemplative, and often has an interactive teaching programme. Summer evening worship is combined with Knock Methodist and Kirkpatrick Presbyterian. 'Stepping Stone' is the congregational monthly magazine. Interesting features include stained-glass designed by Carlo Peitzner; founder of the Camphill Community (Rudolf Steiner Schools), and a baptismal font by Rosamond Praeger, the famous Hollywood sculptress.
