Christ Church, Rathgar

The Presbyterian congregation of Christ Church, Rathgar stands at a busy intersection in suburban South Dublin. Rathgar Road, Highfield Road, Rathgar Avenue, Terenure Road East and Orwell Road all meet at the junction.

The congregation was founded in 1859 and the church was built two years later. The architecture of the church was the result of a competition and an architect from Glasgow was the successful entrant. Built in local limestone and granite it could not be called a typical Presbyterian structure, but the buildings and grounds serve as a focal point for the neighbourhood. It is sometimes known as 'The Floodlit Church' because of its impressive appearance during the hours of darkness.

The congregation has just about 200 families connected to it and runs a very active and dynamic programme with a particular emphasis on youth and community involvement. A full-time Youth and Family Worker promotes the youth activities.

The services on Sunday are at 9.30am, when the sacrament of Holy Communion is observed each week; and at 11.00am we join together to praise and worship God. For the younger members of the congregation there is Sunday Club @ CCR, which runs concurrently with the service at 11am (the children leave after the first part of the service for their programme).

The congregation seeks to be a vibrant and faithful Christian presence in the community reflecting the teaching of Jesus who calls us to "love one another as I have loved you" and to provide a safe yet challenging environment for young people to grow and mature in faith and in life.
