Sandys Street,
Sunday Services:
Minister: Rev. Dr. Michael Barry |
First Newry (Sandys Street)Presbyterianism has been present in Newry since 1642, and the Sandys Street congregation came into existence in 1828 when some members left what was then First Newry after the minister expressed some controversial views; particularly regarding the deity of the Lord Jesus Christ. The congregation grew in size, and reached its largest size at the beginning of the twentieth century. Missionary interest has been strong, with a number of members going overseas; and the congregation has supported this important work with both prayer and giving. The Sunday services centre on the person and work of the Lord Jesus, and worship is offered in gratitude for his mercy and love. The Midweek meeting is a time for Bible Study and prayer. A Sunday School and Bible Class teach students of all ages. The Presbyterian Women's Association offers an opportunity for the ladies of the congregation to fulfil the aims of that organisation. The Fireside Group gives the older members (and others) the chance to reminisce. A Junior Christian Endeavour Society, Youth Fellowship and Youth Club are run in conjunction with Downshire Road Congregation. Since the seventeenth century Newry has suffered great loss through political violence, yet Presbyterianism has survived and played an important part in the town. Since 1970 the numbers of Presbyterians have been greatly reduced, however there is a determination that God's people will continue to testify to his amazing grace shown in Jesus Christ; and so the work and witness of the congregation continues as we look forward in hope. |
