Downshire Road, Newry

Downshire Road church is situated on the Belfast side of the provincial town of Newry, near to the Law Courts, Windsor Hill Primary School and the Teacher's Centre (S.E.L.B.)

We are close to Sandys Street (First Newry Presbyterian) and share much of our Children's and Youth work and also the evening service. In the summer months only one of the two churches is open at a time and members of both congregations worship in whichever is open for July or for August.

Downshire Road (Second Newry) has an early history that goes back to a congregation which met about one mile outside the town of Newry. The present building dates back to 1843 (during the ministry of Rev. John Weir).

Downshire Road Presbyterian Church has 238 families in 1997, some of whom live in the town, others in the surrounding countryside. Activities include Sunday School, Senior Citizens Group, Mums and Toddlers, Junior Christian Endeavour, Youth Club, Youth Fellowship, Indoor Bowling Club, Presbyterian Women's Association, Midweek Bible Study and Prayer Group and Young Adults Group.

Many of these are joint activities with Sandys Street and are also open to any member of the community.
