Mersey Street, Belfast

In about 1930, a group of people began meeting in a hall in Severn Street, with the encouragement of the Minister in Megain Memorial Presbyterian Church. Mersey Street church building was erected in 1932 and apparently it was to have been a Church Extension charge but it was in fact taken over by the Home Mission. In time, it was put under the care of Megain Memorial. It has been described as '1 church, meeting in 2 places' (though I'm not sure how theologically accurate that description is!).

On 1st June 1975 some elders were appointed for Mersey Street though they were ordained to the eldership of "Megain Memorial (Mersey Street)." Megain at that time had a Minister and an Assistant Minister but the Assistant looked after Mersey Street. Former assistants include John Parkes, Dennis Bannerman, and John Kirkpatrick.

In 1991 Mersey Street was given congregational status and also permission to call its then present assistant, Bob Hornby, as its minister. He stayed until 2002. Colin Burcombe has been Minister since October 2003.

Our future!

The Mersey Street area is changing dramatically and over the next few years all the houses will be demolished, the people moved out and new houses built. We hope to reach into the area with the Gospel as it fills up again.

We aim to be a Christ-centred, Bible focused, Gospel driven church.
