Lissara, Crossgar

Crossgar is a small village located mid-way between Saintfield and Downpatrick, right in the heart of County Down. With the central location of the village is appropriate that Lissara Presbyterian Church is also centrally located in the heart of Crossgar.

Lissara was originally formed in 1770 at Ballydugan, near Downpatrick, where the congregation met in a large room at the Mill. The accommodation soon proved inadequate and the congregation obtained a site in the townland of Lissara and constructed a church (or meeting house) about the same length but about 5 feet narrower than the present church hall

The Foundation Stone of the present Church was laid on 26 August 1865 by James Sherman Crawford, Esq., J.P. on a site in Crossgar Square donated by James Cleland, Esq., J.P., (Tobar Mhuire). Among those taking part were Rev. Ringland Fisher (Raffrey), Rev. Moses Black (Kilmore), Rev. A. McCleery (Killyleagh), Rev. William Whyte (Downpatrick) and the Moderator of Presbytery, Rev. W. J. Patton (Dromara).

The present church is a traditional village church of about 190 families and with God's help we seek to be a congregation where God is honoured and worshiped in a way that is meaningful and relevant for everyone. We also recognise that, "Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labour in vain" (Psalm 127;1) and that means that prayer is central in everything we do. We are committed to teaching the Bible in a clear and relevant way and to reaching out to others with the good news about Jesus. Our mission is to see unbelieving people become faithful followers of the Lord Jesus Christ.

If you are thinking of visiting Lissara for the first time you can be assured that you will be made very welcome. Full details of all services and activities can be found on our web site at www.lissara.com.
