Kirkpatrick MemorialKirkpatrick Memorial is a warm and growing congregation of over 240 families situated in the middle of the Ballyhackamore village area of East Belfast. Half the congregation will have longstanding connections with the church over many years, while half are younger families and individuals who have recently moved into the area. The congregation dates back to a city mission work in 1893 and a temporary building was erected on the site in 1908. In 1914 the congregation was officially recognised by the General Assembly as "Ormiston" church and the first part of the current building was erected. This was completed in 1924 thanks to a significant bequest from the estate of the late Rev. J.G. Kirkpatrick of Dunluce. The first minister was Rev James Tolland who had begun his work back as the original city missioner in the 1890s and who eventually retired as minister of the new church in 1945. He was succeeded by Rev A.W.E. Forbes who ministered for 29 years. The congregation has a variety of organisations that draw in folks from outside the congregation including a fortnightly Friendship Club for senior citizens. After an absence of many years, Boys and Girls Brigade companies were restarted in 2007, and this, along with a Sunday Club and crëche reflect the younger age profile of the church and the area. Kirkpatrick Memorial is committed to making the truth of God's Gospel of grace known to all in the area and to turning believers into growing disciples of Christ. An increasing network of discipleship groups meet fortnightly to discuss and apply God's word to modern living. |
