Killala

The oldest Presbyterian Church in County Mayo meets in the atmospheric setting outside Killala along the Mullafarry Road. The church was established in the 1690s and brags that there were 1500 families that claimed a connection at one time, when an attempt was made to start a linen trade in the area. Times changed and most of those families emigrated, leaving a core of farming families to worship together on the first Sunday of every month.

Highlights of the year include a Harvest service, still very meaningful to this rural congregation, and a candle-light Carol service before Christmas. Both these services draw crowds of folks from the surrounding area. The tea after both of these services is supplemented by traditional, homemade goodies.

The present church building was built in 1824. Taking the Killala Road out of Ballina, turn left towards the Mullafarry Quarry, and the church is on the right a mile or two along the road. Visitors are very welcome, but are encouraged to phone ahead to confirm the service time.
