Lower Clonaneese

We are a small congregation of 32 families situated midway between Dungannon and Ballygawley in Co Tyrone. Our members mainly come from the farming community, although more are increasingly involved in many different areas of life.

The Bartlett map of 1602 shows Clonaneese as an administrative area, while the Bodley Map of 1609 clearly shows the 27 townlands of Clonaneese, one of which is Killeeshil.

In 1617 the Presbyterian Minister Rev Robert Hamilton was installed as Rector of Killeeshil Parish, but was ejected in 1623 for non conformity.

Very little is known of the Presbyterians in Clonaneese in the 1600s, but it is known that they erected a meeting house made of mud, commonly called the 'Clabber House'. In 1728 they felt numerically strong enough to have their own minister and supplies were granted.

The present meeting house was erected in the 1740s, replacing the Clabber House.

In 1788 the Congregation split and a new meeting house built at Upper Clonaneese.

In 1917 the Congregations of Lower and Upper Clonaneese were united into a joint charge. Today there is a very good working relationship between the two congregations with members of each taking a leading role in PW, CE and Youth Club.
