Congregations of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland |
|
Upper Aghada,
Sunday Service:
Minister: Rev. John Faris |
AghadaThis is the most southerly Presbyterian congregation still active in Ireland; and its origins date from the 1860s. Until 1839 the congregation worshipped in the home of James Tait , Hermitage, Rostellan. The Taits and the Jefferys are the two extended families, all farmers, who form the bulk of the small group that meets regularly for worship. These families can trace roots to the lowlands of Scotland. A Jeffery ancestor went first as a land agent to West Cork, before moving eastwards. In 1925 a redundant Church of Ireland estate church was purchased for £100. The building still retains many of the original memorial plaques including one to someone who died in India from wounds inflicted by a tiger. Until the late 1950s services were conducted by the minister in Cobh, but when that congregation closed the link was then made with Trinity congregation, Cork. A home bible study group meets during the winter months. We hold a summer holiday bible club, open to all children of national school age (running this year 2008 from Monday, 28th July to Friday, 1st August). |
