Boards and Committees of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland

The Board of Education

Convener: Rev. Robert Herron
Secretary: Rev. Stanley Stewart

Last year the Board of Education had three committees covering church, state and university education, now it has two. The work of the former Church Education Committee has become the responsibility of the Board of Youth and Children's Ministry. Rev. Robert Herron is Convener of the Board of Education and Rev. Stanley Stewart is Secretary.

State Education Committee Convener: Mr. Jim Caves
This committee has a different role within the Republic of Ireland from that which it discharges within Northern Ireland. In the Republic, its job is to support the ministers who are responsible for the management of Protestant and Community School under the National School system; while in Northern Ireland the Committee contributes to local and regional bodies responsible for the government of schools - and also with overseeing changes in schools' curricula, not least in religious education. Rev. Nancy Cubitt is Director of Primary Education and Mr. Brian Duffy is Director of Secondary Education in the Republic of Ireland.

University Education Committee Convener: Dr. Robert Buick
This committee is responsible for University Chaplains:

  • Queen's University, Belfast - Rev. Steve Stockman (Full-time) Miss Lynn Ferguson (Assistant Chaplain)
  • University of Ulster, Jordanstown - Rev. Dr. William Crawley (Full-time)
  • University of Ulster, Coleraine - Rev. John Coulter (Part-time)
  • University of Ulster, Magee - Rev. Joe McCormick (Part-time)
  • Trinity College, Dublin - Rev. Katherine Meyer (Full-time)
  • Royal College of Surgeons, Dublin - Rev. William McLaren (Full-time)
  • Dublin City University - vacant

In Dublin a Methodist/Presbyterian Joint Chaplaincy scheme is in operation. The following Methodists are serving as chaplains:

  • University College Dublin - Rev. Stephen Skuce (Full-time)
  • Dublin Institute of Technology - Mr. Baird Lewis (Full-time)
