The General Assembly

Belfast, 7th - 10th June, 2010

The 2010 General Assembly will meet in Church House, Belfast on the evening of Monday, 7th June with the installation of the Moderator, and continues through three further days to an expected conclusion on Thursday afternoon.

At 7.00pm on Monday, 7th June, the Assembly will convene with members joined by invited guests and members of the public to install their Moderator who will chair the week’s proceedings and represent the Church throughout the forthcoming year.

In an atmosphere of praise and celebration outgoing Moderator, Dr. Stafford Carson, will lead the Assembly in worship and briefly report on his year of office before asking members to proceed to the election of his successor.

After formal proposing and seconding, the Moderator Designate, Rev. Norman Hamilton, will be officially appointed to the chair. His first duty will be to thank Dr. Carson for carrying out the role of Moderator before addressing the Assembly and setting out his plans for the year ahead.

The business sessions of the Assembly begin on Tuesday morning and for the next three days the 1200 delegates, representative of every Presbyterian congregation in Ireland will hear reports and debate resolutions presented to it by the Boards and Committees of the Church.

These will include financial and administrative reports as well as reports from the church wide ministries directed by Assembly which include Mission in Ireland, Mission Overseas, Social Witness, Christian Training and Youth and Children's Ministry.

With the exception of a brief private session the Assembly is open to everyone though only delegates can take part in debates or vote.

Tuesday and Wednesday evenings are set aside for open events to which everyone is welcome.

Presbyterian Talk Policing and Justice on Tuesday evening gives the audience an opportunity to put their points of view on this important topic to a panel including representatives from the Department of Justice and the PSNI.

The Assembly Celebration on Wednesday has been planned by incoming Moderator Dr Norman Hamilton as "An MOT for our Souls". The event will pose questions like "What is going on in our lives that is good, well maintained and up to standard?" and "What is going on that might bring failure, spiritual breakdown or danger?" Answers will come from an invited panel that will discuss how our faith gives us the strength to face the future and make a difference for good.
