Awake to Jesus

9.3.2016 | Congregational Life, Sunday School, Children, Youth and Family,

A series of six Sunday school lessons written as part of the “Awake to Jesus” resource

Jesus the Saviour

Lesson 1:  Looks at the story of Jesus birth – the first event in the life of the man who was to be the Saviour of the World.

The lesson encourages children that the story of Jesus birth is not just for Christmas but for any time of the year. It also encourages children to see the part that they have in the church to tell others about Jesus as their Saviour.

Jesus the Healer

Lesson 2: Looks at the idea of Jesus as Healer and based on the miracles of Jesus in Luke. The lesson is looking at the healing miracles only but obviously Jesus did other miracles that are in the book of Luke and indeed around this story within that Gospel, e.g. the calming of the storm.

The lesson aims to help the children see that there is a purpose for Jesus’ miracles and they were not simply random acts of kindness and to show that Jesus wants to help us when we worry about things, that He is there to help us deal with problems.

Jesus the Pray-er

Lesson 3: The aim of this lesson is to help the children see how important prayer is and especially how significant it was within the life of Jesus. Children need to know that this was not the only time in the life of Jesus that prayer was part of His ministry. It is important to point out where prayer happens and how central it was to all that Jesus did – communication with His Father in Heaven was vital to everything in His life.

Jesus the Storyteller

Lesson 4: Looks at a specific story that Jesus told within the Gospel according to Luke. It’s the Parable of the Great Banquet. This is a parable that is told reasonably often but does not always give time to explore some of the issues that we hope you will be able to explore with the children in your group while you do this one.

Jesus the People Person

Lesson 5:  Looks at how Jesus interacted with and changed the people that Hecame into contact with. The lesson concentrates on the story of Zacchaeus, an amazing story in the Bible of love, forgiveness and the healing of relationships.

This is probably a story that the children will have heard before and may know very well but help them to try and see it anew as they look at Jesus actions of love and Zacchaeus’ response of I’m sorry and then the forgiveness that he receives.

Jesus the Victor

Lesson 6:  This is the sixth and final lesson in this series looking at the Easter Sunday story and the fact that Jesus rose from the dead. We have looked at Jesus life through these six lessons, thinking through some of the characteristics that shaped His life and ministry – the Saviour, Healer, Pray-er, Story teller, People Person and now Victor.

You may want to take some time, if you have done the whole series, to look back and think over some of the things that Jesus has done on His way to this point of Victory.

This lesson is to remind children that the story did not end with Jesus’ death but that on Easter Sunday we celebrate Jesus resurrection and the life and relationship with Him that this event brings us.
