Presbyterian Church Welcomes Major Repair Grant

The Presbyterian Church has welcomed a £1m grant from the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) for repairs to its Belfast city centre headquarters.

The Grade A listed Church House, which stands at the junction of Howard Street and Fisherwick Place is presently undergoing a £4m repair and refurbishment programme to its exterior stonework and the grant will go towards this restoration project.

"This is very welcome news for the Presbyterian Church which has already embarked on the restoration project and which it is hoped will be completed by the summer of 2010. It is also good news for those who are concerned to preserve the architectural heritage of Belfast and of which Church House is regarded as a significant part," commented a spokesman for the Church.

Some years ago, when the extent and cost of the stonework repairs became clear, the Church did consider selling the city centre site and moving elsewhere, considering locations both within Belfast and beyond. However, after protracted internal debate over several years the Church decided to stay and refurbish its 100 year old headquarters, a decision which will now be greatly helped by this generous grant.
